Short answer: your insurance company reports coverage to the California DMV electronically. If a detail doesn’t match, like the VIN, your name or your address, the DMV may show no insurance on file. Call your agent. We correct the details and resend proof of insurance to the DMV, and the DMV system usually updates within a few business days.
Call 888-391-5981 if you got a notice.
Common causes
- The VIN on the policy doesn’t match DMV records (one wrong character is enough)
- A new car was added but not yet reported
- A name or address change
- A lapse from a missed payment, even if it was reinstated
What to do
- Don’t ignore the notice. It can lead to a registration suspension.
- Send us a photo of the notice and your registration card.
- We check the policy against your registration, correct any mismatch, and resend proof of insurance to the DMV.
- Keep your ID card and declarations page handy in case the DMV asks.
